Overview
Edge Hill University is a public, not-for-profit university based on a 160-acre campus in Ormskirk, Lancashire, in the heart of North West England. Established in 1885 as the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England, it has evolved into a comprehensive university offering over 250 courses across three faculties: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine, and the Faculty of Education. The university has almost 10,000 full-time undergraduate students, around 3,000 part-time undergraduates, and nearly 5,000 full and part-time postgraduate students. Edge Hill holds a Gold rating for student experience and Silver overall in the Teaching Excellence Framework (2023), has been rated 4th in the UK overall by Uni Compare 2027, and its Faculty of Education received an Outstanding rating from Ofsted (2024). The university has invested over £350 million in campus facilities over 15 years, including a new Students' Union, Life Sciences building, and award-winning on-campus accommodation rated 1st in the UK by Uni Compare (2024–2027). More than half of Edge Hill's research was classed as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' in REF 2021. The university also has a campus at St James' in Manchester city centre and partnerships at Aintree University Hospital and other venues across the North West.
