Francisk Skorina Gomel State University

Francisk Skorina Gomel State University (ГГУ имени Ф. Скорины) is a public research university located in Gomel, Belarus. It was founded on 21 June 1930 as the Gomel State Pedagogical Institute and reorganised as Gomel State University on 1 May 1969, before receiving its current name in 1988 in honour of Francisk Skorina. The university employs 1,069 staff including 460 full-time academic staff, among them 40 doctors of science, 30 professors, 190 candidates of science and 200 associate professors. It comprises ten faculties offering programs in history, linguistics, foreign languages, biology, forestry, geology, geography, mathematics, computer science, economics, law, psychology, pedagogy, social work, philology and physical education at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. GSU has postgraduate programs (aspiring, 46 specialisations) and doctoral programs (6 specialisations). The university participates in global rankings: it ranks in the top 300 in QS EECA 2025, 2nd among Belarusian universities in Webometrics (July 2025, world rank 3,946), and 8th among Belarusian universities in Scimago 2025. It maintains over 180 international cooperation agreements and hosts a Confucius Institute since 2017. International students make up nearly one quarter of the student body, with over 400 students from China alone.
