Overview
The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz) is a small, trilingual public university founded in 1997, situated in Bolzano (Bozen), the capital of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol in northern Italy—at the crossroads of German-speaking and Italian cultures. The university offers programmes in Italian, German and English, making trilingualism a defining institutional feature and opening doors to international careers.
unibz operates across four campuses: the main city-centre campus in Bolzano, a campus in Brixen-Bressanone, a faculty at the NOI Techpark in Bolzano, and a campus in Bruneck-Brunico. Its five faculties—Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences; Design and Art; Economics and Management; Education; and Engineering—offer Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes. Nine structured PhD programmes support active research across disciplines.
The university has obtained periodic accreditation under the Italian AVA 2 system, formalized by Ministerial Decree n. 220 of 19.06.2020, with quality assurance aligned with the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG). It holds the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) 2021–2027 and participates in national PhD programmes of interest (DIN) in partnership with leading Italian universities.
South Tyrol regularly tops Italian quality-of-life rankings, and unibz regularly achieves top positions in national and international university rankings. Student associations, sports facilities, and an active cultural life complement academic study in one of Europe's most scenic regions.
