IBSUniversity traces its origins to the Institute of Business Studies, established in 1987 to provide revision classes for the Papua New Guinea Institute of Accountants, now CPA PNG. It introduced accounting and business certificate courses in 1994 and began its partnership with Southern Cross University in 1999. The National Executive Council recognized it as a university in 2016, and its own degree programmes began in 2017. The university identifies Mt. Eriama as the campus delivering its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Its four schools cover Accounting and Finance, Business and Management, Economics and Development Studies, and Information Technology. The August 2026 academic registry records 14 qualifications approved by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, spanning diplomas, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, a postgraduate diploma and a master's degree. Southern Cross University programmes are also offered locally, using six-week teaching terms. The accommodation page states that on-campus housing is under construction and lists six contracted off-campus housing providers.
