Overview
Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU), founded in 1947, is a public university of the arts located in Brno, the Czech Republic's second largest city. Named after the renowned Czech composer Leoš Janáček, JAMU comprises two faculties: the Faculty of Theatre (at Mozartova 1) and the Faculty of Music (at Komenského nám. 6). Together they offer more than 20 study programmes at Bachelor (BcA.), Master (MgA.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels in fields including dramatic acting, theatre directing, dramaturgy, scenography, theatre management, radio/TV production, music performance (strings, winds, piano, organ, voice, percussion, jazz), composition, multimedia creation, music production, historical interpretation and conducting. The primary language of instruction is Czech; the European Master of Early Music (EMEM) is the sole programme delivered in English. JAMU is accredited under Czech higher education law and received a positive institutional quality review from Music Quality Enhancement (MusiQuE) in 2020. It participates actively in Erasmus+ and maintains partnerships with institutions worldwide. Regular fees are not charged to standard-duration degree students under Czech law; scholarships are available for accommodation, social need, academic achievement and study abroad. The academy is a cultural hub of Brno, hosting the annual SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER international festival, the International Leoš Janáček Competition and numerous public concerts.
