Overview
The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is a publicly funded state art academy in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with a history spanning nearly 250 years. It offers three degree programs: Freie Kunst (Fine Art), a 10-semester program awarding the Akademiebrief (equivalent to a Diplom); Lehramt Kunst (Art Education), comprising a 6-semester Bachelor and 4-semester Master of Education; and the postgraduate Aufbaustudiengang Baukunst (Architecture), an advanced study program. Teaching is structured around 23 artist-led studio classes in disciplines including painting, sculpture, stage design, photography, film and video, graphic art, and architecture, as well as theoretical instruction in art history, philosophy, pedagogy, didactics, sociology, poetics, and architectural history. Students have access to 13 artistic workshops, a specialized library and archive, and a twice-yearly public Rundgang exhibition. An international exchange program supports study abroad from the 5th semester. Numerous scholarships and prizes are available. Instruction is in German; international applicants must demonstrate German language proficiency at B2 or C1 level depending on the program.
