Overview
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is the oldest university in Greece, the Balkans, and the wider Eastern Mediterranean. Officially founded on 14 April 1837 during the Greek War of Independence, it has played a central role in the intellectual and cultural development of modern Greece for 190 years. A public research university, NKUA is organised into 9 schools and 42 departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in theology, philosophy, law, economics, political science, education, health sciences, science, and sport science, among other fields. It enrols approximately 100,000 students, including around 4,000 international students, and employs over 3,000 academic and administrative staff. NKUA operates three university hospitals (Aretaieio, Aiginiteio, Eygenidio) and numerous research institutes, laboratories, and clinical departments. In 2026 it established a Cyprus Branch, deepening its international presence. The university is subject to quality assurance oversight by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (HQA/ADIP) and participates in the ERASMUS+ programme and numerous international academic networks. It is ranked among the world's top 200 universities by Times Higher Education (2026) and ranks first among Greek and Cypriot universities.
