Overview
Established in 1843, National Art School is an independent fine art school in Sydney. Since 1922 it has occupied the former Darlinghurst Gaol on Gadigal land, within East Sydney’s cultural precinct. Its educational model emphasises studio-based learning, small cohorts, specialist facilities and teaching by practising artists.
The current degree catalog lists the Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and Doctor of Fine Art. Undergraduate study combines studio practice with Art History & Theory and Professional Studies, with disciplines including ceramics, drawing, painting, photomedia, printmaking and sculpture. NAS also offers short courses and high-school education programs.
Student life includes artist talks, cultural events and public exhibitions, supported by Student Services, counselling, wellbeing and academic literacy assistance. The Darani Ngalawada First Peoples Centre provides mentorship and learning support and promotes the inclusion of First Peoples knowledge and perspectives throughout the school.
