Overview
The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA; Greek: Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, ΕΜΠ) is Greece's oldest and most prestigious public technical university. Founded in 1837 by royal decree as a technical school, it was formally established as the National Technical University of Athens in 1914. NTUA is located across two campuses in Athens: the historic Patission Complex (42 Patission str, 10682 Athens) and the main Zografou Campus (9 Iroon Polytechniou str, 15772 Zografou). The university comprises nine schools: Civil Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Architecture; Chemical Engineering; Rural and Surveying Engineering – Geoinformatics Engineering; Mining and Metallurgical Engineering; Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; and Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Undergraduate studies consist of 10-semester (5-year) integrated diploma programmes, with admission exclusively through national numerus clausus entrance examinations — NTUA students rank in the top 1–5% of national candidates. NTUA offers 21+ interdisciplinary and school-based postgraduate programmes leading to a Postgraduate Degree of Specialisation (equivalent to a Master's degree), as well as doctoral programmes with a minimum 3-year duration. There are no tuition fees for postgraduate programmes, and scholarships based on merit and financial need are available. Campus facilities include the Central Library, computer centres, student residences, restaurants, cafeterias, a gymnasium and a cycling track. Cultural activities include the NTUA Choir, String Orchestra, Percussion Group and Dance Section. The university has maintained a quality assurance programme since 1999 with internal and external international evaluators.
