Sámi University of Applied Sciences

Sámi University of Applied Sciences (Samas; Sámi allaskuvla) was formally opened on 1 November 1989 to fulfil a long-standing wish within the Sámi community: to offer Sámi teacher education in the Sámi language and within a Sámi environment. Located at Hánnoluohkká 45, NO-9520 Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino, Finnmark, Norway, Samas is a public university of applied sciences serving all of Sápmi. The university's strategy 2022–2026 describes its core mission as meeting the knowledge needs of Sámi communities and acting as a unifying, future-oriented and responsible institution. Study programs range from short introductory courses (15 ECTS) to doctoral degrees. Programs include: PhD in Sámi Language and Literature; Master's in Sámi Journalism from an Indigenous Perspective; Master's in Sámi Language and Literature; Master's in Duodji; Master's in Sámi Primary School Teacher Education (grades 1–7 and 5–10); Bachelor in Sámi Language and Literature; Bachelor of Sámi Early Childhood Teacher Education; Bachelor in Sámi Journalism; Bachelor in Reindeer Husbandry; Bachelor in Duodji and Design; and short-term programs including Faith and Worldview in Sápmi and Traditional Knowledge (Árbediehtu). Most programs are delivered as online studies combined with mandatory on-campus sessions at Diehtosiida in Guovdageaidnu. Languages of instruction are Northern Sámi and Norwegian.
