Overview

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is one of the world's oldest universities, founded in 1508 in Alcalá de Henares and later established in Madrid. As a major public research university, UCM comprises more than 30 faculties and schools covering all major academic disciplines, from arts and humanities to sciences, health, engineering, law and social sciences. It offers bachelor's (grado), master's and doctoral programmes under the European Bologna framework and is a member of the Una Europa European Universities alliance. UCM is ranked 199th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027, second among Spanish universities and first in the Community of Madrid. It is also ranked in the Shanghai ARWU (top 300) and in the top 100 of the UI GreenMetric sustainability ranking 2026. The university operates two main campuses in Madrid — the Ciudad Universitaria (Moncloa) and Somosaguas — and provides housing through five own colegios mayores with over 700 places and 33 affiliated residential colleges with more than 6,000 places. Student life includes extensive sports, cultural and associative activities. All programmes are subject to Spain's obligatory quality assurance system, with 612 accreditation reports recorded in EQAR/DEQAR.
