Overview

Universidade Lusófona is the largest private university in Portugal, with over 16,900 students and 1,671 academic staff across two university centres: Centro Universitário de Lisboa (Campo Grande, 376, Lisbon) and Centro Universitário do Porto (Rua Augusto Rosa, 24, Porto). Both campuses are situated in city centres and are strategically connected to all public transport networks.

Founded in 1998 through the merger of ISMAG (Instituto Superior de Matemáticas Aplicadas e Gestão) and ISHT (Instituto Superior de Humanidades e Tecnologia), both founded in 1989, the university is managed by COFAC - Cooperativa de Formação e Animação Cultural, a non-profit educational cooperative and the largest non-state-funded educational organisation in Portugal.

The university's name derives from the word 'Lusofonia', referring to all Portuguese-speaking countries and their shared linguistic and cultural heritage. Its mission since 1998 has been 'teaching and research across all domains of science, culture and technology, in an interdisciplinary perspective, and especially in service of the development of Portuguese-speaking countries and peoples'.

The university currently offers 65 bachelor's degrees, 70 master's degrees, 4 integrated master's degrees, 8 Erasmus Mundus international master's degrees, 2 professional master's degrees, 13 doctoral programmes, and a wide range of postgraduate courses, specialised training, and micro-credentials. All programmes comply with European higher education requirements and the ECTS credit transfer system, and are accredited by A3ES (Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior).

The university leads the FilmEU European University alliance (Film and Media Arts European University) and participates actively in European research programmes including Horizon and Erasmus+. It hosts over 1,700 international students from 84 nationalities and is organised around 15 faculties, schools and institutes.
