Overview
The University of Trieste (UniTS) is a public research university founded in 1924 in Trieste, northeastern Italy. Its origins lie in the Advanced School of Commerce founded in 1877. Following Italian Royal Decree No 1338 of 8 August 1924 it became the University of Economic and Commercial Studies, expanding to a full university in 1938 with the Faculty of Law. Over subsequent decades it added faculties of Engineering (1942), Arts and Humanities (1943), Sciences (1946), Pharmacy (1956), Medicine and Surgery (1965), Political Sciences (1974), Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators (1978), Psychology (1997) and Architecture (1998). A 2012 reform replaced faculties with 10 departments. UniTS operates campuses in Trieste and Gorizia, holds ANVUR Class A accreditation, and participates in the Transform4Europe European University Alliance. For 2026/2027 it offers 44 bachelor's and single-cycle master's degree courses, 39 master's degree courses, 25 master programmes, 23 PhD programmes, and 39 specialisation degree courses.
